IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR BUSHFIRE MESH

Bushfire Mesh is manufactured with grade 316 stainless steel, it is a high-grade quality which is non-combustible and non-corrosive.

Bushfire Mesh is available in two finishes:

  • Black powder coat
  • Mill – also known as off the machine or raw stainless steel

How does it provide protection?

Stainless steel has some unique properties:

  • It can withstand temperature three (3) times hotter than Aluminum
  • Is Corrosion Resistant and can be used in places where Galvanized products rust
  • Has excellent impact resistant strength (Tensile) and can be used as a mechanical barrier

Stainless Steel Bushfire Mesh is able to provide protection against Embers and Radiant Heat because of its unique properties as well as it Mesh Dimensions:

  • 62% open area allowing airflow through the Mesh and not redirecting the air around
  • Aperture of 1.6mm that stops larger embers from passing through the Mesh
  • Holding embers on the Mesh to burn out making them safe
  • Allowing the larger embers to drop on the side of the mesh that is not a risk to ingnition
  • Allowing embers less than 1.6mm through the mesh that are too small to re-ignite*

MAINTENANCE

Both finishes require minimal maintenance to maintain the aesthetics appearance and mechanical performance. Long life can be achieved with Bushfire Mesh by following and applying appropriate installation and fabrication and with regular cleaning undertaken – it’s atheistic appeal will be retained.

Best practice for wildfire preparedness is to clear debris in front and around the Bushfire Mesh. When Bushfire Mesh is used for an application requiring airflow, with an aperture of approx 1.6mm or 0.0629 inch, it is also suggested to clear any debris to avoid any airflow decrease.

When the Bushire Mesh is used around landscaped areas, enclosing decks, under stairs and perimeter fencing be aware when mowing and using machinery like trimmers or edgers. Such metal objects as these tools may damage the Bushfire Mesh beyond its functionality.

For the installation, we have created a DIY guide that demonstrates possible installation methods. Before commencing your installation, you should consult with the NFPA / Firewise, State or Local Fire Authority home hardening guidelines or a Wildfire Home Assessment Specialist.

If you are using a Mill Finish, the below is the best practice for care and maintenance.

MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

The cleaning frequency of stainless steel depends on four points;

  • The environment
  • Position of the stainless steel structure
  • Stainless steel surface finish and structure design
  • Client’s expectations

A rule of thumb for cleaning external stainless steel is when you clean the surrounding windows also clean the stainless steel.

CLEANING

Wash surface of stainless steel (both surfaces if stainless steel mesh) with soap or mild detergent and warm water. Rinse in clean cold water and dry. Cleaning to be undertaken in accordance with table ‘A Guide to Specifying and Cleaning External Stainless Steel’.

A GUIDE TO SPECIFYING AND CLEANING EXTERNAL STAINLESS STEEL

Environment Grade 316
Clean Inland 6 -12 months
Polluted urban/Industrial 6 -12 months
Coastal/Marine (not splashed) 3 – 6 months

Note: Rainwater is an effective natural cleaner, stainless steel that does not get rained upon will need more frequent cleaning.

STAINLESS STEEL FABRICATION INFORMATION

Stainless steel can be contaminated by carbon steel which will lead to corrosion. Ideally, a fabricator will have dedicated workshop and tools for stainless steel only.

Contamination can be picked up from:

  • Grinding wheels, wire brushes and linishing belts
  • Steel storage racks
  • Tooling used with other metals
  • Contamination from grinding or welding sparks from nearby carbon steel fabrication

ARCHITECTURAL WOVEN MESH

If the mesh is not black powder coated and is being used externally for aesthetic purposes, to minimise tea staining please evaluate if the mesh is to be picked, passivated and electropolished.
